Tulsa Chinese Christian Church is an independent, non-denominational church. It has been following the revelation of the Bible since its establishment almost forty years ago. The deacon board and Pastor cooperate to manage the church. In Acts 6:3-7, the Bible records the early church and how the first deacons were chosen. Because they were full of the Spirit and wisdom, the whole multitude was pleased, the word of God increased and the number of disciples multiplied. 1 Timothy 3:8-12 shows the qualifications of a deacon and the process of choosing deacons. Deacons are to be worthy of respect and sincere. They must abide by the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested or evaluated, and if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.
Regarding the history of the deacon board in our church, please refer to our church history. This is how we choose a new deacon: usually current deacons or the pastor nominate a candidate. After the approval of the deacon board, the pastor notifies the person and asks him to pray about it. If the candidate accepts, the pastor will introduce the new deacon and the current deacons to the congregation.
There are no regulations regarding a deacon’s term or how many deacons serve at one time. Historically, deacons resign due to relocation for a job or retirement. Since we are a small church, each deacon works hard and serves many years. In recent years, God led several young and faithful Christians to Tulsa who had the heart to serve as deacons. Thank God! May He raise more new deacons. May God teach us to cultivate and train new deacons with wisdom.
